【Non-Binary Community】 Their Room

CONNECT introduces institutions, communities, and services recommended by the Palettalk editorial team to our readers. This corner is not just about connections and input within your smartphone but also about providing various “places of connection” where you can directly communicate your thoughts, listen to others, and more.
The “CONNECT” we are introducing this time is Their Room, an online community that was previously featured in Palettalk’s manga.
It is mainly a space where non-binary individuals can casually chat and connect through Discord, a free chat tool.
The community was created by someone who is non-binary and asexual, with the goal of providing a space where people can casually talk, even about personal matters.
For more on the story behind the community’s creation, check out these manga links:
Who is it recommended for?
This community is great for anyone who wants to talk online about the frustrations they feel regarding topics like:
- The gender binary belief
- Pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting
- Living in a society where you are assumed to be cisgender
Although it is centered around non-binary individuals, people of any gender are welcome to join!
What can you do there?
Using Discord, participants can casually express their daily frustrations, discuss interesting news, movies, books, and more, having a relaxed interaction.
Rather than active conversations, it is more common for participants to share thoughts like “daily frustrations,” with others reacting through stamps or emojis.
They have also hosted a few “online book clubs” in the past.
You can join regardless of where you live.
How to Join
Please visit the website and apply through the registration form: https://their-room.studio.site/
Note: The current number of participants is 13, and they expect a maximum of around 25 members. Recruitment may stop once they reach capacity.
Message from the Representative
I’m non-binary, asexual, and married. For a long time, I felt “being unable to speak my truth” and “a sense of frustration” with the world’s focus on the “normal” family and marriage. But through the internet, I found others who felt the same way, and made friends. After over a year of exchanging messages, I decided to create this community thinking “I want to connect with others who might be struggling with similar issues.” Palettalk even turned the story of how we started into a manga.
We use the chat app Discord. Members casually share their “daily frustrations,” and others may or may not react with stamps or comments. It’s a relaxed form of communication. For now, we are not having intense interaction with each other. If you’re feeling frustrated with societal norms and wondering, “Who can I talk to about this?” I hope this space can be where you can express those feelings.
