For example, some people call themselves \u201cgay\u201d or \u201cgay women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: In Japan, the word \u201cgay\u201d is mostly used for men who are attracted to men, but in English-speaking countries, it can also be used for women who are attracted to women.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How someone talks about their sexuality is up to them. We should not decide for someone else and say they are a \u201clesbian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_It_Okay_to_Say_%E2%80%9CLezu%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>Is It Okay to Say \u201cLezu\u201d?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLezu(\u30ec\u30ba)\u201d is a shortened form of the word \u201clesbian\u201d in Japanese. Even today, some people still say it in Japan, and many may use it without meaning any harm, thinking it is just a shorter version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the word \u201clezu\u201d <strong>has been used in a hurtful, discriminatory way toward lesbians. That is why \u201clezu\u201d is a word we should avoid using<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is true that some people in the community use the word \u201clezu\u201d to talk about themselves. Sometimes, it is also used in a friendly way within the lesbian community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, just because someone uses a word for themselves \u2014 even if it is a word that is often seen as a slur \u2014 that does not mean others can use it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if one person does not feel bad being called a certain name, that does not mean everyone else feels the same way. In fact, many people feel hurt when someone else calls them \u201clezu.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, there is a big difference between \u201cself-labeling\u201d (how someone talks about themselves) and \u201cother-labeling\u201d (how someone else talks about them). But still, it is true that there are many simple, one-sided images about lesbians, and that discrimination, misunderstandings, and biases are spreading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, we will explain some common misunderstandings and biases about lesbians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CDo_you_like_any_woman%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CDont_try_to_hit_on_me%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>\u201cDo you like any woman?\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t try to hit on me.\u201d<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexual orientation means the kind of people someone <em>might<\/em> feel attracted to. Just like straight people do not like every person of a different gender, lesbians do not like every woman just because they are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CShe_became_a_lesbian_because_men_didnt_like_her_because_she_doesnt_know_how_great_men_are%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>\u201cShe became a lesbian because men didn\u2019t like her \/ because she doesn\u2019t know how great men are\u201d<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A person\u2019s sexuality is not decided because they gave up on something, or because they did not have enough experience. Sexuality can change over time, but it is not something people can just \u201cchoose\u201d whenever they want. Also, some people wrongly think \u201clesbians = hate men,\u201d but think about it like this: Do straight people like the other gender <em>because<\/em> they hate their own gender? Of course not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CWomen_in_same-gender_relationships_dont_do_anything_sexual%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>\u201cWomen in same-gender relationships don\u2019t do anything sexual\u201d<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes from the idea that \u201cWomen are not active in sexual matters,\u201d and from turning lesbian relationships into something overly dreamy or unrealistic. Whether or not a couple has sex in their relationship depends on their own choices, values, and relationships\u2014 just like straight couples.
